I found a toy today,
in a special treasured box
I had packed away,
in my cedar chest.
I remember when we were kids,
we would play under trees and bushes
with our dolls and toys
all day if we could ..
Till our Moms calling made us come in.
One year you were ill and could not come
to the Christmas program at church.
I brought your gift to you,
I kept it safe from the snow,
under my coat
so it would not be marred..
Remember the time we took off and went to our local lake ?
Pulling a little red wagon, with a can of pork and beans,
a loaf bread, and six hotdogs
singing "Side by Side ".
We thought our friendship was doomed for life
when we were kept apart for days!
We sang songs into the night,
drove the other home from a party,
shared dreams, and heartbreak..
it was never " how "..
It was always "When and Where"
You were my friend
through all my life.
Always with me,
even tho we might be miles apart.
Even now I recall
we have been through it all,
the birth of our children,
the death of a loved one.
We were the Rock the other held onto.
We were the sisters we never had.
We have those special memories
hidden deep in our hearts .
Remember the Time you traded me that little silver toy horse,
for the little boy that lived across the street named Sonny?
Sonny moved away that next fall if I remember.
My friend, after fifty years
I still have that little
silver horse in that treasured box.
