“The Raven”
By Edgar Allen Paw

Once upon a midnight dreary,
when my humans were quite weary,
After having run their “rat race” –
such a curious, daily chore!

Since I’d spent the whole day napping;
I was in the mood for rapping,
so I started gently tapping,
tapping at their bedroom door.
Just enough to wake them up;
disturb their slumber, nothing more.

Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December.
Soon I heard their bare feet
shuffling on their chilly bedroom floor.
Patiently I sat there waiting -
anxiously anticipating,
their reaction when at last
they opened wide their bedroom door.
Then they’d know just what I craved;
their company and nothing more.

At last, an opening I could see –
but bleary eyes glared out at me,
from faces that did not look happy –
not what I was hoping for!

I stood my ground and loudly purred
but no one spoke a single word.
My cute demeanor didn’t work –
when it had always worked before.
Just silence there and nothing more.

Presently my soul grew stronger; hesitating then no longer,
I squeezed myself between their legs
and sauntered through their open door.

I quickly leaped upon their bed
and found a spot to rest my head.
Although I’d slept for hours on end
I figured I could still use more.
Now darkness there and nothing more.
