THE CATS MEOW
Tom was smart, All agreed on that, and he was big and I do mean big. He weighed in at the County Fair Cat show at 25 pounds. His human liked the attention so he went along with the show. He even liked it a bit himself, but of course he would not let on that he also liked the attention, especially so as he knew his performance meant extra catnip. He had a pretty good human that understood cats and provided for him in a splendid way. So what is a cat supposed to do.
Humans like this are scarce, ask any cat, so a smart cat goes along, does what he must and purrs a lot. Yep, Tom was smart, he had it figured out and he even allowed the "cool shades"
mounted over his beautiful eyes while he sat waiting for the judges. When he realized the other cats were jealous he really came into his rightful place as a proud, arrogant mischievous feline. The king of the hill, one cool cat.

Besides his size, Tom had unusual paws. One pad was off by it's self a bit and acted more like a human thumb. When others asked his human where he came from the answer was always the
same, "He was dropped off by a flying saucer." Tom still was not certain this was meant as true or one of those human things, not to be taken as said. Some times humans were to much even for a smart cat. Ok, time to purr. His human was happy, he just got another blue ribbon and he was being stroked gently on the jaw just like he liked it. He still didn't really understand what the fuss was all about.
He had been put in a maze which didn't perplex him at any time as he could easily jump the six foot height. It was sort of fun showing off so he opened the first door picked up a tasty treat and crept around the bend to the next door. This door was stiff and not easily opened but he holding on to the door handle with his forepaw's he twisted it and then put one rear paw on the door jam and pushed. Tom caught the collective gasp of all the onlookers as he went for the treat. The rest of the maze was for dummies so Tom flexed his muscles just slightly
and he was out of there.
He went back to his place, jumped on the table and sat there politely. Then as an after thought and as a climax to his performance he snagged his shades with one claw, bent his head just so and slipped them on. A little crooked perhaps, but on. His human quickly adjusted them and the judges clapped their hands. He won best of the show. Time to purr and Tom turned it on. Hmm, another bit of cat nip , way to go human, way to go. Purrrrrrrr.

Tom, said his human, I know you are way smarter than any other cat ,so I am going to teach you how to read. A cat that can read, wouldn't that make the headlines? Tom gave a weak meow.
So it started, A little each day. The alphabet and vowel sounds were a start but all Tom could do after two weeks was to say meow. Another two weeks and at last it was accepted that Tom would never master language.
However Tom had found it interesting and continued to look at the children's stories. Puss and Boots was a favorite and so was the tune "The Three Blind Mice." He liked that and told some of his friends about what he had learned. One of these friends said, "You know Tom " If other cats could learn to read also we could start up a magazine, just for cats, It would be "The Cats Meow"
