We were there to watch
the hawks migrate
the water birds congregate
the gray squirrels agitate
and the deer perambulate
before it was too late
and the harsh winter shuts us in
We were standing still,
watching the gray squirrels
Scurry through the falling leaves of autumn
When all of a sudden a quietness came
and with it came a flock of bluebirds
Headed south for the winter..
They were everywhere with their silence
Flashing blue and rust colors
Then they were gone, Like vanishing ghosts
leaving only the rustle of leaves
caused by the gray squirrels burying acorns
For the fast approaching winter
We were just there to watch
before it was too late
and the harsh winter shuts us in
